USCIS nearly doubling the citizenship application fee

(and this increase is on the fast track)

Today USCIS announced that they plan to raise the citizenship application fee from $640 to $1,170. They proposed to lower the biometrics fee from $85 to $30.

That will put the total cost of applying for citizenship at an unaffordable $1,200--nearly double what it costs now.

On top of this, they are proposing to eliminate both the partial fee waiver and the full fee waiver.

And finally, I've learned that rather than the normal 60-day comment period, there will only be a 30-day comment period, starting now.

We knew this was coming, but wow--it's shocking and outragious. And you can bet the immigrant rights groups are going to fight it tooth and nail.

Stay tuned--there's sure to be news on this in the coming weeks.
